Summary
Farmers are compelled by the limited availability of livestock feeds to make decisions regarding priorities for their allocation to different classes and species of livestock in their holdings. In making these decisions, they must first ensure that essential functions such as survival and the provision of draught power and manure are fulfilled, and that the mix of other outputs is optimised.
Feed allocation decisions are taken in the context of seasonally varying amounts and quality of feeds, with different costs or labour implications, and with regard to short-term production trade-offs. At present there is little information on farmer decision-making in these areas, and no appropriate tools for evaluating the consequences of different allocation strategies. |
