Summary
Stall feeding systems have been widely adopted for small ruminants in intensively
farmed parts of Indonesia, despite the apparent difficulties and costs, including labour,
of providing sufficient feed inputs. Feeding systems are, however, also designed to
mix excess feed with manure to produce compost essential for maintaining intensive
cropping. Changes in feeding systems to improve livestock productivity must thus
recognise the multiple objectives and overall efficiency of resources use.
