Research Project Project ID: R5190

Title The effects of supplements of crop residues and industrial by-products on the performance of smallholder goat production
Species Goat, Sheep
Commodity Meat, Milk, Skins
Livestock Keeper Group Smallstock Keepers
Production System Semi-Arid Crop Livestock
Country or Region Swaziland
Research Theme Nutrition
Research Approach Strategic Research
Funding Agency DFID Livestock Production Programme
Overview The project looks at poor performance of small ruminants in Swaziland- due in part to poor nutrition especially in the dry season.

Summary

The productivity of local Ngurri goats in Swaziland is limited in the dry season by the decline in quantity and quality of rangeland grazing. There are, however, options to supplement range grazing at these times with crop residues and agro-industrial by-products. Higher quality supplements are preferentially fed to cattle but large amounts of lower quality residues are available in some areas. These could be fed to goats, though there are nutritional problems in ensuring adequate nutrient intakes from lower quality supplements.
