Summary
This project looked at the development of cereal-free sweet potato tuber (SP) and cassava root (CAS) -based poultry rations for small-scale farmers to relieve the competition for maize from the human food and the livestock feed sectors. This would enable the poorer section of the population to purchase and consume maize. The LPP-funded project started in 1992, with in-house strategic research and activities to identify a suitable field site. The location selected was around the Mankon Research Station (MRS), Barmenda, in the western highlands of Cameroon. MRS is part of the Institute of Animal and Veterinary Research (IRZV), which has its Headquarters in Yaounde. In 1994, collaboration was established with the IRZV, under a memorandum of understanding with the NRI, to implement the field activities of the project. For this, LPP funds were channelled separately through an Extra Mural Contract (F0060). This is a combined report for both components of the project.
