Subsistence, Commodities & Markets

Marketing is an issue which is less important to subsistence farmers than more cash–oriented farmers. However, the development of the agricultural sector and the improvement of people's livelihoods will be very dependent on a system of markets where they can bring their animals to sell and buy.

There are many constraints to marketing, including: distance from markets, communication, knowledge of prices, quality of the products etc. Where village markets occur, for example on particular days in a week or month, the distance of these markets from urban centres has an impact on the probability of traders coming to the markets. Similarly, an improved all-weather road network can make a significant difference. Some of these issues are dealt with in this section of the toolbox.
