Department for International Development

The Department for International Development (DFID) is the part of the UK Government that manages Britain's aid to poor countries and works to get rid of extreme poverty.

The objective of DFID's Strategy for Research in Renewable Natural Resources is to generate new knowledge and to promote its uptake and application such that the livelihoods of poor people are improved through better management of renewable natural resources. It addresses the knowledge needs of poor people whose livelihoods are dependent on natural resources production systems in semi-arid areas, high potential areas, hillsides, tropical moist forests, and at the forest-agriculture interface, the land/water interface and the peri-urban interface. The breadth of the strategy programme reflects the wide variety of environments in which poor people live in poorer countries and the multiple routes by which research can reduce poverty.

The bilateral component is organized as ten research programmes covering the needs of people dependent on agriculture, forestry, livestock and/or fisheries for their livelihood.

Research programmes with particular relevance to smallstock include:

Livestock Production Programme Livestock Production Programme
Animal Health Programme Animal Health Programme
